Ignition coil

The ignition coil is a central component of the ignition system in gasoline engines and its function is to convert the vehicle's low electrical system voltage into a very high ignition voltage. This high voltage is required to generate a spark in the spark plug, which ignites the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber.

Inside the ignition coil are two windings – a primary winding and a secondary winding. Through electromagnetic induction, the 12-volt vehicle electrical system voltage is increased to several thousand volts. This high voltage is then transferred to the spark plug, where it generates the ignition spark.

Modern vehicles use various ignition coil systems, including individual ignition coils, so-called stick ignition coils, or ignition coil packs. These systems enable precise ignition control and contribute to efficient combustion, improved engine performance, and lower emissions.
