Heat exchanger / matrix

The heat exchanger – also called the heating matrix – is a central component of the vehicle's heating system. It is located in the heater housing behind the dashboard and ensures that heat from the engine cooling circuit is transferred to the vehicle interior.

While the engine is running, hot coolant circulates through the engine and then through the heat exchanger. A blower directs air over the fins of the heat exchanger, heating the air before it flows into the vehicle's interior. This heats the interior and simultaneously defrosts or clears the windshield.

The heat exchanger is usually made of aluminum or copper with fine cooling fins that enable efficient heat transfer. The proper functioning of this component is crucial for reliable interior heating and a comfortable vehicle climate, especially in cold temperatures.

A defective or leaking heat exchanger can lead to coolant loss, fogged windows or insufficient heating performance and should therefore be replaced in good time.
