DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter)

The diesel particulate filter (DPF) is a key component of modern diesel vehicle exhaust systems and serves to filter harmful soot particles from the exhaust gases. This significantly reduces emissions and ensures compliance with legal environmental regulations.

The DPF is located in the exhaust system between the engine and the exhaust manifold and consists of a special ceramic filter element with many small channels. As the exhaust gases flow through this filter, soot particles are trapped and collected in the filter.

To prevent the filter from becoming permanently clogged, the engine control unit regularly performs a regeneration process. During this process, the temperature inside the filter is increased so that the accumulated soot particles are burned off and converted into ash. This process occurs automatically while driving.

Over time, however, ash can accumulate in the filter, or the DPF can become more heavily burdened by frequent short trips. A clogged diesel particulate filter can lead to a loss of performance, increased fuel consumption, or warning messages in the vehicle.
