Intercooler

The intercooler is an important component of turbocharged or supercharged engines, ensuring that the intake air compressed by the turbocharger is cooled. Due to the compression of the air in the turbocharger, its temperature rises significantly. The intercooler lowers this temperature before the air enters the engine.

Cool air is denser and contains more oxygen. This allows the engine to operate more efficiently, generate more power, and simultaneously reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The intercooler is usually located at the front of the vehicle, where it is optimally cooled by the airflow.

Most vehicles use air-cooled intercoolers, which are similar in design to a conventional radiator and consist of aluminum with fine cooling channels and fins. Some modern systems also use water-cooled intercoolers integrated into the coolant circuit.

A defective or leaking charge air cooler can lead to loss of power, increased fuel consumption or poor engine performance, as the turbocharger pressure can no longer be built up correctly.
