Inside is the thermostat, which opens or closes the coolant circuit depending on the temperature. As long as the engine is cold, the coolant circuit remains closed to allow the engine to warm up more quickly. Once the optimal temperature is reached, the thermostat opens and the coolant flows through the radiator.
