The coolant temperature sensor is an important component of the engine management system and measures the temperature of the coolant in the engine cooling system. The measured values are transmitted to the engine control unit, which uses this information to optimally control various engine functions.
The coolant temperature is used to regulate various parameters, including the injection quantity, ignition timing, idle speed, and the activation of the radiator fan. The sensor plays a particularly important role during cold starts, as the engine initially requires a different air-fuel mixture to run efficiently.
The coolant temperature sensor is usually located in the cylinder head, the thermostat housing, or directly in the coolant circuit. Most sensors use a temperature-dependent resistor (NTC), whose electrical resistance changes depending on the temperature.
A faulty sensor can send incorrect temperature readings to the engine control unit. This can lead to increased fuel consumption, poor engine performance, starting problems, or an activated engine warning light.
At Autoteile Gossau, you'll find coolant temperature sensors in original equipment and high-quality aftermarket versions for numerous vehicle makes and models.
